The Town of Mammoth Lakes is located just east and south of Yosemite in central California. Surrounded by the Eastern Sierra mountains, Mammoth is just five hours north of Los Angeles or
Las Vegas and just a 45 minute plane ride from anywhere in the state. Most people however, still think of Mammoth as a drive to destination.
Mammoth Driving Instructions are easy and the drive in daylight is
spectacular especially in autumn when the trees are changing colors, although hard core
Mammoth fans drive at night so they won't miss a moment of sunshine.
Mammoth Transportation
You can get here with these easy Mammoth Directions from Los Angeles, Reno,
or by air from Reno Airport (RNO), Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco (SFO), San Jose (SJO) Orange County (SNA) and San Diego (SAN) airports daily. Horizon and United airlines fly direct to the Mammoth airport and you will want to check out the Mammoth airline flights especially in the winter. There are up to 5 flights each day.
Mammoth Shuttle Bus
The Town has
year round shuttle bus transportation. There is also dial a ride and various other modes to move you around. When you fly you may want to get a Mammoth rental car.
TIP: In the winter, Mammoth is a
haven for snow. If you drive in the winter you will want to carry car chains, and / or drive a 4WD with snow (all season) tires. There are some precautions with Winter Driving to avoid car
trouble. You will definitely want to read these. Note:
Tire chains are cheaper at home than in Mammoth, and more likely
to be in stock. Don't worry about putting them on as there are folks
to help you for about $40. alongside the road. Again, you will
need them and the California Highway Patrol will stop you and check to make sure you have them, or make you turn back. Travel Smart.
